Chalk Talks

At the Chalk Talks, scientists from the Göttingen Campus present their research topics in an entertaining and vivid way for visitors to the Forum Wissen. Chalk and blackboard are the only tools used. The Chalk Talks take place in the vestibule of the Forum Wissen.

Hineingeschmeckt

Exquisite wines from the traditional Bremer wine shop meet unique objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen. In the Hineingeschmeckt series, visitors can start the evening with a glass of wine in Café Liesels x Forum Wissen – with entertaining stories about selected objects, told by the scientists from the University of Göttingen who look after the collections. Wine expert Philipp Bremer will sharpen your senses and explain what connects objects and wine.

Salon Debates

In the Salon Debates, we address current issues from science and society, which are discussed with guests in a talk show format. The debates take place in the atrium of the Forum Wissen. The debates are recorded live and can then be viewed on the University of Göttingen’s Youtube-channel.

Do you have a suggestion for a topic that is currently being hotly debated in public and on which you would like to learn more about scientific viewpoints? Cultural collaborations

Whether theatre, performance, concert, reading, themed tour or hands-on offer: We welcome ideas and enquiries about cultural collaborations! Events and educational programmes that take place in our museum relate to the exhibitions and themes of our museum or to the collections of Göttingen University and are developed and implemented together with us.

Do you have an idea for a special exhibition?

Wonderful! Here you can find out whether your idea fits into the Forum Wissen: The main theme of our basic exhibition ‘Spaces of Knowledge’ is the creation of knowledge. Our special exhibitions focus on topics from research and their impact on society, provide an impetus to engage with current debates and deal with interdisciplinary issues. They often deal with interdisciplinary topics, but can also focus on a single discipline or collection. Our special exhibitions are also about making the processes of knowledge creation tangible. The focus is on working methods and questions, rather than the results themselves.

Our exhibitions always refer to the following questions:

Perspectives: Who is involved in the creation of knowledge? Who is not?
Practices: What activities, skills and working methods are used to produce knowledge?
Connections: In welche Netzwerke sind die Wissen-Schaffenden und die Dinge des Wissens (Objekte und Zeugnisse) eingebunden?

Special exhibitions can be integrated into the ‘Spaces of Knowledge’ as open spaces (Freiflächen), in the separate exhibition space (Freiraum) or in the large special exhibition area (Sonderausstellungsfläche).

Open spaces

The open spaces are dynamic spaces within the 12 ‘Spaces of Knowledge’ on the 1st floor. They complement the core exhibition with current exhibits from research and society and offer space for innovative ideas that arise from student projects or social initiatives. Artistic interventions are also welcome. The open spaces always relate to the theme of the respective exhibition space. It is also possible to utilise several open spaces on the same theme at the same time. However, the reference to the exhibition space must be taken into account.

• Time needed to prepare: at least 3 months
• Duration of exhibition: 3-6 months
• Cost: Depending on the concept and the objects selected, smaller costs for transport etc. may be incurred.
• Equipment: Presentation aids, templates for labelling etc. are available in the Forum Wissen.

• Students (groups or indiviudals)

• Collection managers

Separate exhibition space (Freiraum)

The Freiraum is an independent exhibition space on the ground floor of the Forum Wissen, which enables smaller experimental exhibition projects on 80 square metres. Insights into open processes and questions can be provided here.

• Time to prepare: 12-18 months
• Duration of exhibition: 3-9 months
• Cost: 10,000 – 60,000 Euro. As a rule, cooperation partners contribute their own share to a Freiraum project (funding through a third-party project, etc.).
• Equipment: Basic equipment consisting of display cases and presentation materials is available in the Forum Wissen. An external design office should be consulted for more elaborate room designs.

Large special exhibition area (Sonderausstellungsfläche)

With 360 square metres and five interconnecting rooms, the large special exhibition area provides a space for large-scale exhibition projects that address a broad target audience in terms of theme and realisation.

• Time to prepare: at least 18 months
• Duration of exhibtion: 6-12 months
• Cost: 100,000 – 300,000 Euro.

For an exhibition project in the special exhibition area, third-party funds are required.

• Institutions of Göttingen Campus co-operating with other partner organization
• Cooperating cultural institutions in collaboration with researchers and/or employees of the University of Göttingen

supports you in integrating exhibition projects into the preparation of research and third-party funding applications
develops the exhibition concept with you in joint idea development and workshops or design thinking processes and plays a key role in the transformation of research topics into exhibition formats, collaborates as a curator or initiates and supports the selection of suitable exhibition agencies and design processes
coordinates exhibition planning (scheduling, organising transport and loan contracts, setting up exhibition technology)
is responsible for the restoration of the exhibits, is involved in the mediation from the outset and develops programmes and mediation formats for the exhibitions, informs the media and the public about the exhibition project
advertises the exhibition on flyers, posters and banners in public spaces as well as on the website, in the newsletter and on the social media channels of the Forum Wissen.
